Carbohydrate foods do not have the same effect on blood glucose levels. Low GI foods are slowly digested and absorbed resulting in a gradual release of glucose into the blood stream. It increases and sustains energy levels and is a very popular way to lose weight and the keep the weight off.

Shocking food facts
The story about nuts
Nuts are rich of mono-unsaturated fats (MUFA) that helps to prevent heart disease and other lifestyle disorders. Nuts form part of the fat food group and also contains small amounts of protein. However, 1g of fat contains 38g of fats making the macro nutrient with the highest energy (kilo joule value).
200g of nuts contains xxx kilo joules. 1 slice of bread contains 370kJ making 200g of nuts equal to xxx slices of bread. Thus if you want to lose weight you must include nuts in very small portions.
Do you know your food labels?
Products labeled as lite does not always mean low fat! Low fat products contain less than 3g per 100g product. Most lite mayonnaise products contain more than 20g of fat per 100g product. In South Africa Lite simply refers to “less” than the regular product, but it can still be high in fat. Sometimes when one component is removed another component is increased e.g. sugar free chocolates are higher in fat than regular chocolates and fat free instant soups contains nearly double the amount of salt (sodium) than regular instant soups.
Juicing up a storm!
125ml of fruit juice is equal to one fruit portion. Fruits contain fructose which is a natural sugar and fructose contains the same amount of kilo joules as sucrose (table sugar). The kilo joule content of 400ml fruit juice is equal to xxxx slices of bread! Most commercial fruit juices contain preservatives and very little fibre. It is always better to eat whole fruits but if juice is part of your daily eating plan try to dilute it with water and to drink it between meals.
